ABOUT DR. JAYME MATHIAS

Mathias Reading
Dr. Mathias often jokes that he wasn’t born in Austin—but that he got here as quickly as he could! Upon finishing his undergraduate studies at St. Louis University, he first moved to District 2 at the age of 23 to complete a nine-month internship, which included outreach to gang youth in East Austin. After completing his first graduate degree in D.C., he returned to District 2 in 2000 to begin his career of service to education in Austin.

In 2001, Dr. Mathias co-founded La FUENTE Learning Center, which, for more than 15 years, provided children’s programs, the DELTA program for high school credit recovery, and classes for adult English-language learners. In 2002, La FUENTE partnered with the Austin ISD and became the first organization to offer the DELTA program outside an AISD facility.

Dr. Mathias has great empathy for our AISD teachers & administrators. In 2005, he became a certified instructor of secondary foreign languages in the state of Texas, and he has taught all levels of high school Spanish, including Advanced Placement Spanish Language &
Advanced Placement Spanish Literature. For four years, Dr. Mathias served as president of a local, college-preparatory school in South Austin, overseeing the school's Vice Presidents for Academics (i.e., the Principal), Admissions, Advancement, Postsecondary Studies, and the school's innovative Corporate Work Study Program, which provided high school students the opportunity to intern in Austin's corporate world to offset the cost of their college-preparatory education.

In 2009, while serving as pastor of what he would grow to be Austin's largest Spanish-language Catholic parish, Dr. Mathias worked with Christina Collazo to co-found Todos Juntos Learning Center, a dual-generation learning center that continues to provide early childhood education to infants, as well as rich educational resources for their parents.

In 2012, Dr. Mathias was elected to the Austin ISD Board of Trustees, to represent District 2, a district of 55,000 voters in Dove Springs, East Austin, East Riverside/Oltorf, Montopolis & Travis Heights.

Dr. Mathias possesses two undergraduate degrees, four graduate degrees, and his Doctor of Philosophy in Leadership Studies. He shares: “The English word ‘education’ comes from a Latin root, e-ducere, which means ‘to lead.’ Through these years of service to education here in District 2, I’m humbled to have helped provide a 'hand-up' to the future leaders of our community!"
